Tasmania - A Major Tourism Destination

Tasmania is positioned nationally and internationally as a premier holiday, events and convention destination. The majority of visitors are attracted by the state's unspoiled nature, cultural heritage and fine wine and food. Tasmania's compact size and diversity of attractions combine to make it a popular place for both touring holidays and short breaks. Sustainable tourism practices help keep Tasmania's tourism industry competitive and maintain the richness of the natural and cultural resources. The Discover Tasmania website provides information to start planning your visit and includes basic facts about our culture.

Support from Government and other Bodies

Tourism Tasmania provides strategic advice to investors and developers based on relevant research and market intelligence about industry performance and potential.

The Tourism Industry Council Tasmania is the peak body representing the Tasmanian tourism industry. The Council provides strategic direction and a united voice for the sustainable development and growth of Tasmanian tourism and operates the tourism industry National Accreditation Program in Tasmania.

The joint State Government and tourism industry strategic plan, Tourism 21 is a blueprint for action to improve the performance, competitiveness and structural efficiency of the tourism industry in Tasmania. The plan provides key performance indicators for the industry as a whole and recognises the separate role of industry and Government in meeting 10-year targets for the Tasmanian tourism industry.

In May 2008 the Government announced a new approach to the way Tasmania is marketed as a holiday destination, and a new funding structure to support the changes. The new marketing approach sees the introduction of five Tasmanian marketing zones, rather than the three traditional regional areas of north, south and north-west. These are:

  • Launceston, Tamar and North-east
  • North-west Coast
  • Western Wilderness
  • Hobart and surrounds
  • East Coast.

The Zone Marketing approach brings the State's tourism industry into much closer partnership with government and significantly improves the government and industry's return on marketing investment. In addition to almost $5 million spent on marketing each year, another half a million dollars will be made available each year, for the next three years, to support Zone Marketing.
