The following projects represent a snapshot of ongoing tourism development within the State. Further information may be obtained by contacting Tourism Tasmania.

Launceston Airport Redevelopment

The $20 million redevelopment of Launceston Airport commenced in May 2008 and will be undertaken in three stages, with an estimated completion date of July 2009.

The redevelopment will expand the terminal, allowing greater passenger movement, provide improved lounge areas, more retail space and an upgraded baggage handling system. Passenger screening facilities will be improved and full checked baggage systems introduced.

When completed, this major redevelopment will continue to expand the tourism opportunities for the north of the State.

Moorilla Estate

Located near Hobart on the River Derwent, Moorilla Estate includes a vineyard, antiquities museum, restaurant and luxury accommodtion. The Museum of Antiquities is currently being redeveloped and will expand the space devoted to antiquities and add space for modern and contemporary art pieces from privately held collections. Construction will be predominantly underground with the museum due to reopen in 2009. There are also plans to build four additional chalets overlooking the river.

Trail of the Tin Dragon

The Trail of the Tin Dragon is a $4.3 million tourism experience which celebrates the history of tin mining and the contribution of the Chinese in north-eastern Tasmania. The Trail follows the north-east touring route, starting in Scottsdale, through Branxholm and Derby and finishing at St Helens. The Tin Centre at Derby was officially opened in May 2008 and tells the story of tin mining in the region and its significance locally and internationally.

The Trail has the potential to increase the number of visitors travelling between Launceston and St Helens by 60,000 each year and to add $9 million annually to the local economy.

York Cove Seaport

The York Cove Seaport development, located on the site of the former George Town ferry terminal, was opened on 15 December 2007. This facility houses conference rooms, a restaurant and hotel. The development is valued at $17 and will include a floating marina, public boat ramp and apartment blocks.

Lufra Hotel Redevelopment

This $20 million tourism development on the Tasman Peninsula commenced in September 2007 and consists of a three -year upgrade of the Lufra Hotel at Eaglehawk Neck including a five-star restaurant and the addition of a further 20 hotel accommodation units. The redevelopment will enhance visitor facilities on the Peninsular and complement other attractions in the area.
