Nickel production for Tasmania is only in its early stages, with Allegiance mining continuing to develop its Nickel mine at Avebury near Zeehan.
According to ABARE world nickel mine production increased by 3% to 1.38mt in 2005. Canada, Australia and the Russian Federation accounted for much of this. The production of stainless steel accounts for over 65% of total world nickel consumption so nickel demand is directly linked to developments in stainless steel markets. World nickel consumption was around 1.2mt in 2005, with China being the largest consumer of steel.
