Significant funding has been allocated from both State and Commonwealth Governments for water development projects aimed at drought-proofing Tasmania and securing high reliability water for irrigation and town supply.

Current major projects are:

  • Midlands Water Scheme
  • Sassafras-Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme
  • Forth River Irrigation Schemes (Mersey-Forth Water District)
  • Meander Dam Pipelines
  • Shannon-Ouse-Clyde Project
  • North-east Dams
  • Winnaleah Irrigation Scheme
  • Headquarters Road Dam
  • Meadstone Dam
  • Upper Macquarie Dam
  • Upper South Esk Dam.

Information on each of the irrigation development projects is available on the Department of Primary Industries and Water website.

In March 2009 the State Government gave approval to proceed with design and development of a major new $78 million irrigation system for Tasmania's Midlands. Final approval for the project to proceed will depend on certain requirements being met, including planning and environmental approvals. The Department of Primary Industries and Water has further information on the Midlands Water Scheme proposal.
