The disposal of large volumes of regular waste relies on the use of transfer stations. Waste is deposited by collection vehicles and then sorted into categories for subsequent collection and transfer to appropriate landfill or recycling destinations.
There are three waste depot categories (waste depot classifications 2004):
Landfills that receive 100 tonnes or more of waste per annum are classed as level 2 ‘waste depots’ under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
The table below describes the types of wastes that may be accepted at each category of landfill for disposal. Classifications for individual landfill sites are found on the IRIS waste map.
