Maps – Waste

Up to 1,000t of controlled waste is generated annually in Tasmania. Waste producers best understand their wastes and are responsible for the proper identification and classification of the wastes they produce. Controlled wastes are further classified using specific waste codes (See Department of Tourism, Arts and Environment, List 1 and List 2).

Written advice should be sought from the Environment Division if any doubt exists as to whether or not a waste is a controlled waste.

Most controlled waste will need to be analysed to determine compliance with levels specified in the Information Bulletin 105 – Classification and Management of Contaminated Soil for Disposal (PDF 100 kb) prior to determining an appropriate reuse, recycling, treatment or disposal approach.

Clinical and related waste is generated from a variety of healthcare facilities and other clinical settings and comprises a number of subcategories, each with their own special handling and/or treatment and disposal requirements. The Department of Tourism, Arts and Environment have released a draft Approved Management Method for Clinical and Related Waste document.

The storage, treatment and disposal of controlled waste may constitute a level 2 activity under EMPCA and be required to undergo an environmental assessment and planning approvals process.

The Department of Tourism, Arts, and the Environment lists a number of approval processes for the storage, transport, treatment and disposal of controlled wastes as well as maintain a register of waste transport businesses who are authorised to transport controlled waste categories for 'fee or reward' in Tasmania.
