The disposal of large volumes of regular waste relies on the use of transfer stations. Waste is deposited by collection vehicles and then sorted into categories for subsequent collection and transfer to appropriate landfill or recycling destinations.
There are four types of waste:
Controlled waste (which includes clinical waste) has special handling and / or treatment and disposal requirements. The Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 defines controlled waste.
