Between 1998 and 2002 the total tonnes per kilometre on road and rail in Tasmania increased by 8% pa. The Tasmanian heavy freight task is expected to continue to increase, which will place a large demand on road provision and maintenance. The national freight task is forecast to double from 2005 to 2020, with trends for Tasmania indicating even higher growth, up to treble the freight task.
The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources has conducted a Freight Demanders Survey for 2005-06. The results from this survey are expected to be available in August 2007.
If current traffic growth rates are maintained on urban roads over the next 10 years, traffic volumes will increase 20-25% on current levels.
