Given its size, Tasmania is well supplied with transport infrastructure, with:

  • an extensive road and bridge network
  • 867 kilometres of railway network
  • four major deepwater ports
  • four major regional airports.

The Department of Infrastructure Energy and Resources in partnership with local government is managing the development of Regional Integrated Transport Plans.

The aim of the Integrated Transport Plans is to provide a strategic framework for transport and infrastructure planning and investment across regional areas.

Plans to cover each of Tasmania's three regions have been developed:

The Freight Logistics Council supports improvements in Tasmania's freight chains by working jointly with service providers, shippers and government. The Council is jointly funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments.

Several schemes support the Tasmanian transport infrastructure and reduce cost disadvantages incurred from conducting business in Tasmania due to its isolated location. These include the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme and the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme.

The IRIS transport map aims to provide detailed information on transport related infrastructure and services.
