Maps – Energy
In 2002, Tasmania was connected to the Australian natural gas network by a 753 km sub-sea transmission pipeline, which brings natural gas from Victoria to Tasmania. The pipeline is supplying major customers, including the Bell Bay Power Station, which has been converted from oil-fired gas, a key factor in the $400 million Tasmanian Natural Gas Project. Natural gas pipelines are being progressively rolled out to industrial, commercial and residential customers.
The introduction of natural gas has introduced a competitive new source of energy and created new development opportunities particularly for industries that require direct heat or steam for processing.
Powerco Ltd, a New Zealand company, undertook the building of 700 km of distribution networks throughout Tasmania, a project estimated at $200 million. Stage 1 of construction of the distribution network, completed in July 2005, involved connecting 23 major industrial and commercial customers. Stage 2, completed in April 2007, involved connecting small commercial and residential customers and over time the network will expand to give access to approximately 38,500 households and businesses.
Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is also used as an energy source by the residential, commercial and industrial sectors throughout Tasmania.
