Development of the first track-type tractors begain in the early 1900's. Caterpillar Inc was established in 1986 from the Caterpillar Tractor Co. The company continued to expand and by 1997 had become the world leader in diesel engine manufacturing. In 1995 Caterpillar undertook a joint venture with Elphinstone to form Caterpillar Elphinstone Pty Ltd.
In Australia, Caterpillar maintains engineering, marketing, financial services and a major parts distribution hub in Melbourne. Caterpillar also manufactures motor graders, truck bodies and attachments and is the only large machinery supplier that has its own earth-moving equipment manufacturing facility.
The Burnie facility in Tasmania was established in 1975. At this facility Caterpillar Elphinstone designs, constructs and distributes underground mine machinery. Products include load haul dumps, mining trucks, LHD loaders, haulage trucks, common powertrain components and support infrastructure. The Burnie facility employs over 600 staff.
Also located at Burnie are fabrication and assembly facilities and a test centre. The test facility also serves as a trining centre for operators and maintenance staff.
The company's products are used in most Australian underground mines and exported for use in underground mines worldwide. The primary markets include Australia, North America and South Africa.
