Maps - Demographics

Tasmania's population is distributed in three main regions - south around the capital city Hobart, north-east centred on Launceston, and the north-west which features the cities of Devonport and Burnie.

The Tasmanian Treasury reports that population growth is expected to continue at around current rates over 2008-09, supported by strong natural increase (birth minus deaths), high levels of overseas in-migration and modest net interstate in-migration. This in-migration is expected to be assisted by Tasmania's greater housing affordability and employment opportunities relative to other states.

The State is experiencing demographic change which will have significant economic, social and fiscal impacts in the future.

Details of population change over time by Local Government Area (LGA) are available through the IRIS Demographics Map.

The Tasmanian Demographic Change Advisory Council provides the State Government with expert advice from key areas across both Government and the community. The Council will provide advice on addressing demographic change issues such the ageing of the population, a decrease in the size of the workforce, skill shortages and the geographic spread of the Tasmanian population.

A Demographic Change in Tasmania: Challenges and Opportunities issues paper was released in October 2007. The paper discusses emerging economic, social and fiscal issues that Tasmania can expect to face. It is the first report from the council and is designed to seek input from the community on emerging issues mentioned.

An information paper:Tasmania's Workforce: health impacts on participation and productivity in the face of an ageing population was released by the Demographic Change Advisory Council in March 2008.

In May 2008 the Demographic Change Advisory Council released a consultation paper: Population Projections and Profiles for Statewide comment by local councils and other stakeholders. Once finalised, the projections will be an important tool for the State Government, local councils, the business sector and community groups in planning for the impact of future demographic change.

In April 2009 the Demographic Change Advisory Council released its final Strategies Paper: Demographic Change in Tasmania: Strategies for addressing challenges and opportunities.

Projections

The Demographic Change Advisory Council - Tasmania, in consultation with local governments, regional bodies and State Governmenty departments, produced final population projections for Tasmania. The projections cover a period of 50 years and are based on populations as at 30 June 2007. They play an important role in planning the State's future in the areas of infrastructure and provision of Government services such as education and health.
